The City of Tampa Water Department’s 2025 water quality report gives the average total hardness of the city’s finished water as 211 mg/L, or 12.3 grains per gallon. On the U.S. Geological Survey’s scale, more than 180 mg/L counts as very hard. A water softener takes that hardness out of the water before it reaches your fixtures, your glassware and your water heater. This page explains what a softener does, whether you need one on Tampa city water, and what to ask before you take a quote.
Water Filtration Tampa is an independent referral service, not an installer or plumber. When you send the form, your details are passed to an independent local water treatment pro, who can contact you and prepare a quote.

Tampa’s hardness in plain numbers
Hardness is caused mainly by calcium and magnesium dissolved in the water. Utilities report it in milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate, or in grains per gallon. The City of Tampa gives both: 211 mg/L, or 12.3 grains per gallon, as the 2025 average for city customers. That works out to about 17 mg/L for each grain.
| USGS grade | mg/L as calcium carbonate | Where Tampa sits |
|---|---|---|
| Soft | 0 to 60 | |
| Moderately hard | 61 to 120 | |
| Hard | 121 to 180 | |
| Very hard | More than 180 | City average 211 mg/L (2025) |
The figure is an average for the City of Tampa Water Department’s finished water. If you live in Brandon, Riverview, Lutz, Wesley Chapel or another nearby community, your water may come from a different provider with its own report and its own figure. If you are on a private well, no utility report covers your water at all, and a test is the only way to know. The guide to Tampa water quality explains the rest of the city’s report.

What a water softener does
A conventional softener uses ion exchange. Water runs through a tank of resin beads, and the resin holds on to the calcium and magnesium while releasing sodium (or potassium) in their place. When the resin is loaded with hardness, the softener rinses it with brine from a second tank, the salt tank, and sends the rinse water to a drain. Then it is ready again.
The standard that covers these units is NSF/ANSI 44, for residential water softeners that use a cation exchange resin regenerated with sodium chloride or potassium chloride. When you compare quotes, ask which standard each unit is certified to, and check the listing yourself.
- Less soap scum: in hard water, soap reacts with calcium to form scum, so more soap and detergent are needed
- Fewer white deposits on dishes, glass, fixtures and basins
- Less scale building up inside pipes and water heaters
- A softener does not filter: it is not designed to remove taste, odor or other contaminants
Do you need a softener on Tampa city water?
It is a choice, and the city says so. In its own words: using a water softener is a matter of personal preference but, using a water softener may not improve the safety or quality of water as it relates to health. Other utilities agree that hardness is not a health issue: they say hard water does not pose a health risk and there is no health-based drinking water standard for it, and the EPA’s list of secondary standards has no hardness figure.
So the reasons to soften are practical. If you are scrubbing white spots off the shower glass, using more detergent than you would like, or seeing crust build up on faucets and showerheads, a softener addresses those. If none of that bothers you, you may not need one. A pro can test the water at your tap so you are deciding from a measured figure, not a guess.
Salt, sodium and your diet
The City of Tampa notes that many water softeners exchange sodium for the calcium and magnesium in the water and therefore increase the sodium content of the water. If you are on a sodium-restricted diet, the city suggests you may want to consult your physician. That is good advice: ask your doctor, not a salesperson.
Some households keep one cold water tap unsoftened for drinking and cooking, or add a reverse osmosis faucet at the kitchen sink. Softeners can also be regenerated with potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride; NSF/ANSI 44 covers both. Ask the pro about these options, and ask your doctor what matters for your diet. The reverse osmosis system Tampa page explains how an RO faucet works.
Salt-free conditioners
You will see systems sold as salt-free water conditioners. They use a different technology from ion exchange, and we found no primary source on what they do to Tampa water, so we make no claim either way. If a quote includes one, ask the installer exactly what it is certified for, and to which standard, before you buy.

Softeners and your water heater
Hard water deposits can build up as scale on pipes, and utilities name water heaters among the places scaling happens. A softener reduces the hardness that forms that scale. There is a second point worth knowing: water utilities commonly note that some softening systems have the potential to increase the corrosivity of the water, which in turn can damage the anodes in a water heater. Ask the pro how the system you are quoted is set up, and check your water heater maker’s advice on anode checks.
Sizing a softener for a Tampa home
A softener has to match two things: how hard your water is and how much water your household uses. A good quote shows how the size was worked out, so you can compare one installer’s proposal with another’s.
- Test the hardness at your own tap, rather than relying on an average or a vendor’s chart
- Count the people in the house, the bathrooms and any high-use fixtures
- Choose the softener’s capacity from the hardness and the daily water use
- Set the regeneration to match, so the softener rinses when it needs to
- Plan the space: the resin tank, the salt tank, the bypass and the drain
Vendor websites publish very different hardness figures for Tampa, some far above or below the city’s own report. Use the city’s 2025 figure if you are a city customer, or a test of your own water, and ask any installer to tell you where their number came from.
Good to know
Softener and filter maintenance intervals vary from one model to another. Follow the maker’s schedule for your unit, and ask the pro to show you how to check the salt level and use the bypass.
What to ask before you take a quote
- What hardness did you measure at my tap, and how?
- What capacity are you proposing, and why that size for my household?
- Which standard is the unit certified to? Can I see the listing?
- Salt or potassium chloride? How will I add it, and how will I know it is low?
- Where will the softener sit, where will it drain, and is there a bypass valve?
- Does this job need a permit, and who arranges it?
- What upkeep does the maker call for, and what does service involve?
- Is this quote for a purchase, a rental or a lease, and what happens if I move?
If you already have a softener that has stopped working, or you want a new one put in, the page on water softener installation in Tampa covers installation, service and repair. If you are also bothered by taste or odor, compare a whole house water filter in Tampa, since a softener alone will not change that.

Questions people ask
How hard is Tampa water?
The City of Tampa’s 2025 water quality report gives an average total hardness of 211 mg/L, or 12.3 grains per gallon, for its customers. The USGS counts more than 180 mg/L as very hard.
Is softened water healthier?
No health claim can be made. The City of Tampa says a softener may not improve the safety or quality of water as it relates to health; softening is a matter of personal preference.
Does a softener add sodium?
Many softeners exchange sodium for calcium and magnesium, which increases the sodium content of the water, the city says. On a sodium-restricted diet, ask your doctor.
Will a softener fix a chlorine smell?
No. A softener removes hardness. Taste and odor are a filter’s job: see whole-house water filters.
Does Water Filtration Tampa sell softeners?
No. It is an independent referral service. Your request goes to an independent local pro, who can prepare a quote.
